Cannot Create A Stable Subkey Under A Volatile Parent Key Driver Install

System.IO.IOException: Cannot create a stable subkey under a volatile parent key. At Microsoft.Win32.RegistryKey.Win32Error(Int32 errorCode, String str) at Microsoft.Win32.RegistryKey.CreateSubKey(String subkey, RegistryKeyPermissionCheck permissionCheck, RegistrySecurity registrySecurity). I tried to install the RAID driver used in the boot disk that is used to run the restore jobs, Intel Rapid Storage RAID driver. Restore disks are built machine specific with RAID and Ethernet drivers injected into the restore disks as needed.

Hello I have this same issue with SBS2011 Standard as has been reported elsewhere when running Windows Server Backup. I also have an error when trying to run the backup wizard from the SBS console. When opening the server backup MMC console, the error shows 'A fatal error occured during Windows Server Backup snap-in(Wbadmin.msc) operation. Error details: Cannot create a stable subkey under a volatile parent key.' I have already tried: - remove Eset Mail Security 4.3 which was running - rename DIAG key in vss section of the registry - install all windows updates - uninstall, reboot, reinstall the Windows Server Backup fetaure - VSSAdmin list writers shows no errors on all items I do have 1 SQL Express 2008 database running on this server, and I had SQL Management Studio Express installed. I have read the 'cannot create a stable subkey under a volatile parent key' can affect SQL Management studio. I have removed SQL Management Studio (had to go through c: windows installer and uninstall manually as it didn't show up in Programs and Features) but this has not resolved the issue.

Nothing seems to make a difference. What else can I look? As a wise man once said to me - have a sense of proportion. Hi Jon, I have the same Problem with wbadmin on SBS 2011 Standard, the command 'wbadmin.exe get disks' shows the same error message.

After that I used sysinternals process monitor and found that the volatile subkey is HKLM System CurrentControlSet services VSS Diag. The process wbengine.exe tries to open the subkey SPP wich does not exists. Next I tried to create a subkey to Diag manually with regedit and administration privileges and got the error (translated from german) 'key cannot be created. Error writing registry'. This was no problem on a second computer with SBS 2011 Standard and a working Windows Server Backup feature. Renaming the Diag key and restarting VSS Service was of no help either. I do have no problem using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio R2, installed as a component of SBS 2011 Standard or Updaterollup 3 for SBS 2011 Standard. I hope this will help Shaon for futher investigation.

Shaon - my apologies, I did not see an email saying you had replied so I did not look at your suggestions, but thank you for your efforts. Wolfgang - genius. Stop the Volume Shadow Copy service 2.

Regedit, rename HKLM System CurrentControlSet VSS Diag to Diag.old 3. Create a new key Diag 4. Create a new subkey of Diag named SPP 5. Start the Volume Shadow Copy service 6. Run Windows Backup software and confirm the message is now gone, and you can configure backups.

Hope that helps. Thanks As a wise man once said to me - have a sense of proportion.

Hope that helps. Thanks As a wise man once said to me - have a sense of proportion. Hi Wolfgang I can confirm that I carried this out on a live problematic SBS2011 Standard system which runs SQL Express 2008. I did not need to reboot the system. I think the important thing for me was that I needed to create the SPP key manually, because I had previously tried renaming/deleting the Diag key and allowing the VSS service to recreate Diag automatically.

This did not work, so when you said about SPP I tried to create it but was told 'access denied' or similar. So then I deleted Diag completely, created it manually, and created SPP manually. When I restarted VSS all of the other Diag subkeys appeared automatically. What have you got to lose? Your backup isn't working anyway at this time, so just try it.
