Beretta A303 Shotgun Manual

Our Assessment: The Beretta A303 is a very popular semi-automatic shotgun. Due to its gas operated action, it is light recoiling and a pleasure to shoot for extended sessions at the range. I have evolved backwards from 391 to 303 only for reasons of 'ease' of cleaning. Use it as a winter clays gun and like it. I have gone to using wire brush Dremel tool for quick clean of piston? Tried Hoppes, brake cleaner and carb cleaner with softer touch rags and the Dremel seems best to me; solvent not an issue. All the disassembly stuff aside, how do you guys QUICKLY clean your Beretta autos short of soaking in acid?

Slip 2000 choke and piston cleaner for a few minutes, deep clean about every 6 months, good lubricant and wipe down after every session.
The little 303 20ga 2 3/4' I have is one of my favorites.

Don't.
That's quick enough, isn't it?
Well, actually, I do clean mine, but not real often and I don't try to get it spotless. You would be amazed how long it will keep shooting without cleaning. Unless you are using filthy ammo (like Federals or Estates, for example), it will go many thousands of rounds with no cleaning. When you do clean it, there is no point in trying to leave it spotless, because it will be dirty again the first time you shoot it. Just scrape off the thick deposits from the piston, gas cylinder, and magazine shaft, don't bother to leave it perfectly shiny. Wipe down the bolt with an oiled patch, spray the trigger group with brake parts cleaner, then with Breakfree CLP and wipe off as much as you can (or blow it off with compressed air). Spray the choke tube threads in the barrel with brake cleaner. That's about it.
With the ammo I use (Rio) and because of the Beretta's chromed bore, my barrels never have anything in them to clean out. Some other ammo might leave plastic deposits.
Now, if the gun gets wet, that's a horse of a different color. Dry it ASAP. A blow dryer helps. Don't even put it in the case to take it home if the gun or the case is damp. I'm paranoid about dampness.
My treatment of my Berettas (benign neglect) does not lead to rust nor wear. So why worry about it?

Thanks for the good info. Because I am shooting in winter in Great Lakes area, 303 comes from warm home to cold vehicle, to shoot in cold & sometimes snowy weather, back to cold vehicle with added moisture of a couple bird dogs breath, often stop for errands & finally back home. I then feel compelled to at least wipe it off. Insides do collect residue as I shoot whatever is available & cheap (often Top Guns). So far so good with wipe-off and monthly Dremel brush out. Is any one solvent best for loosening the black caked on crud?

the advice to use Slip 2000 is a good one..I have a spare piston and swap out the spare cleaned one at re-assembly. Let the dirty piston soak for 10-15 minutes and the carbon wipes right off. If you go too long between cleanings, then stubborn fouling may require a brushing and second soaking.
I prefer the chemical 'solution' to the mechanical one to minimize wear on the piston grooves that the dremel could eventually cause.
A side benefit to the Slip 2000 is that it is an excellent choke tube cleaner too. I keep a small jar for soaking and a big jar for refilling when the solution gets too cruddy.
Good luck.

Tupperware container filled with a 50/50 solution of Simple Green and water. When I come home all chokes and piston are soaked in the container until I need them again. Don't forget to pull them out a wipe off with a paper towel before you leave to shoot. Make sure everything is covered with the solution.
For a deep cleaning I put everything in the solution for 24 hours. That includes trigger group, piston, bolt, bolt block, gas valve parts and connecting rod. Dry and relube before re-installing.
Wallys/HD has other de greasers that work like Purple Power and Greased Lightning. As always keep chemicals away from your wood.
