Leica 50mm Summicron Serial Numbers

This article will be constantly updated and sample images added, I promise. Introduction As frequent readers might already know, the Leica Summicron-R 50mm f/2 has been on my radar since the beginning of this Blog.

While the Summilux (50mm f/1.4) holds the appeal of being one stop faster, that’s about all that one can say in favour of this lens. The Summicron is several stops cheaper, sports the same build quality, smoother bokeh AND it was designed. (Just like and the soon to arrive ) A few weeks ago I finally decided to get one, so I started browsing the usual auction sites. Many offers were either way too expensive or it was the 1st generation of the lens being sold (which is ). In the end I discovered, due to sheer dumb luck, a seller on a not so well known platform who sold off all of his Leica film gear at very attractive prices.

Among his articles was a 2nd generation Summicron-R 50mm f/2 in excellent optical condition and I simply had to get it. I ended up also buying an Elmarit-R 28mm f/2.8 from the same person, but you can read on. I asked for a bundle price and he agreed, selling me both lenses at an insane price. (Unless I drop one of these lenses, I cannot possibly lose any money if I ever decided to part with them.) So I went there the very next day to pick up my lenses and am currently waiting for the Leica-R to EOS adapters.

The Lens in Detail My copy was built in Canada, but I don’t mind at all since Mandler worked for Leitz in Canada. The fact that it’s a canadian version also means that I didn’t pay even more for the brand name. According to, my copy is an R-only version, without the 1st and 2nd cam, so it won’t work on any of the Leicaflex SLRs. (I guess it’s good that I bought a then.) The serial number ( 3438216), according to, indicates that it was built in 1987. The build quality is amazing (41mm long, 66mm wide and weighing only 290g) and both the focus and aperture ring are simply perfect to work with. The lens has a built-in hood (like my 135mm and the upcoming 90mm) which is awesome, and the barrell extends slightly when focussed to the minimum focus distance, but the front element does not rotate.

Manual focus is a joy, because turning the ring from infinity to minimum focus distance (which is 0,5m) takes about 270°. The lens barrell shows only few signs of use and the glass is absolutely perfect. Looks like new The lens comprises of a simple “6 elements in 4 groups” design, has only 6 aperture blades and costs a hell of a lot of money compared to all other lenses with the same design. You can – with the exception of the Zeiss Ultron – get every other 50mm f/1.8 or f/2 lens out there for less money. But let’s have another look at those beautiful coatings and not worry about the price too much shall we? Beautiful multicoatings In use As soon as I get my adapters, I will go out and use it in the streets so I can report my findings.

P.1 #11 p.1 #11 Help Identify Leica Summicron Now, you are making me more curious as the R does not have 10 blades! However, the serial number is a Leica R number. As serial numbers should be, they gave each lens its own serial number, and counted up. Serial numbers as low as 50,000 are still floating around. Leica made lens number 1,000,000, a 50mm f/1.5 Summarit, on 24 October 1952, at which time they already had onver 100 years of experiance.

Sample Images Let’s see how this lens performs wide open against bright light. The sharpness is simply outstanding! I can’t wait to see how the Summicron performs on my 4 horsemen test. More Sample Images A few days ago, I went out on a little stroll around the neighborhood with the 50mm and the 90mm Summicrons.

I shot all these images wide open, processed most of them using the Velvia 100F preset from VSCO (as a starting point, because I was so happy to finally see the sun for once). I took all pictures handheld and through the optical finder. While I did miss focus in a few cases (user error), I did not feel like I needed to use Live View at any time.

I will show 100% crops of most images, so you can see how incredibly amazing this lens is. As you can see, the lens is incredibly sharp (look at the right half of the crop), but it does produce some CA when facing extreme conditions (the gold plated letters were blindingly bright in the sun). Also, the lens expresses a significant amount of vignetting. Obviously, you wouldn’t shoot such a subject wide open, so both the vignetting and the chromatic aberrations wouldn’t be much of an issue anyways. Here’s our parliament building, shot at f/8.

I have to set up the AFMA on the focus chip, because nothing on this building is actually in focus. As you can see, vignetting is a non-issue, as are the aforementioned aberrations. Lastly, more of an artsy shot, because I love stone roads and tracks: Canon 1Ds mk III, Summicron-R 50mm f/2, @f/2, 1/500s, iso 100. The images I have sold out of this lens, not a single one of the customers wanted to “review a chart” before deciding whether it was worth the asking price or even enjoyable to view for free truth be told, charts are for people who read more than they shoot. It is about the IMAGES. This lens give a look that cant be quantified but can be perceived and it UNIQUE. I have better mid’s when it comes to sharpness but nothing beats the LOOK and that is what is enjoyable.

“that is a mesmerizing image but how did the lens that took it rate on a chart?” SAID NO GALLERY VIEWER EVER. Well of course people can argue all day about MTF, Bokeh, Stellar Resolution, Astigmatism, Welbeck Lines etc, etc. But the proof of the pudding is in the eating! Take your shot, get it printed up/out, and look, then look again. Getting to know your lenses is an art.

I have only managed to ‘learn’ two lenses so far: the Schneider Kreuznach P A Curtagon 35mm f4 shift lens for Leicaflex and the Nikkor 85mm f1.8 HC lens for Nikons F, F2, Nikkormat. For many years, I earned my living with this lens as a Professional Portraitist. I still have it because although I am now retired, I still receive ‘requests.’ Liked.


Leica M 50/2 Dual Range Summicron

The 50/2 Dual Range Summicron is one of the most interesting Leica M lenses with the closest rangefinder coupled focusing of any M lens. The removable 'eyes' provide parallax corrected viewing in the close focus range. The flat dovetail mounting base for the eyes gives the DR has a unique appearance among Leica lenses. A popular lens in the user market, many photogs consider the DR their sharpest lens. A 50 DR had the honor of having the highest resolution ever tested by the now sorely missed American photography magazine, Modern Photography, at over 100 lines per mm. Using it in the close up range can be confusing, and so the detailed explanation below. If you want to shoot closer than .7 meters with your M camera, the Dual Range Summicron remains your most convenient choice to this day.

The eyes must be removed before mounting or dismounting the lens. Left pic shows lens mounted without 'eyes' close up attachment in normal focusing range, from infinity to one meter. The eyes will not mount in normal focusing range because the interlocking dovetail mount ball bearing can only be depressed in the close focusing range. The classic chrome front caps are easy to lose, as well as dent or scratch. Use a modern plastic front cap in the field. Notice the eyes, there is some separation on the larger side, but it is still very usable.

To use Close-up Focusing Range:

  1. Mount the lens ( lens will not mount if eyes are attached)

  2. Pull the focusing barrel AWAY from the camera body (barrel will pull outward about 3 mm)

  3. In this extended position, rotate the focusing barrel towards the camera's advance lever

  4. The square block of metal aligned with the focusing index mark in the pic above right, will lock in position at the 8 depth of field marking

  5. You can now mount the eyes, because in this position the base of the eyes will depress the ball bearing in the lens barrel, allowing the eyes to mount

  6. To dismount the eyes, you must return the lens barrel to the same position as when the eyes were mounted

  7. With the eyes removed, you will now be able to dismount the lens

  8. The lens barrel will remained locked until you once again pull the focusing barrel outward and rotate the barrel back to the normal focusing position

The 50/2 Dual Range Summicron was made from 1956 to 1968, only in chrome.

The pics don't adequately show the magnificent fit and finish of the Dual Range. A modern 50/2 Summicron is probably sharper, but side by side, there is no contest on which one is the better made. Until you hold them side by side in your hands, you won't fully appreciate the construction differences of the classic 50's and 60's lenses compared to modern lenses. For Visoflex fans, the focusing head of the DR will unscrew for bellows close up work.

Compatibility: Leica has confirmed that the DR will not mount on all M6, due to internal changes of the film chamber. Try the DR on your M6 before you buy it, if possible. While the DR will mount on the Leica CL, Minolta CLE, the close-up attachment will not line up properly to these camera's viewfinders in the close focusing range. At least some DR's will fit and work fine on the Konica Hexar RF, with its near copy of the Leica M RF/VF. This is the only non Leica M camera that I know of which will allow the DR to work in the close-up focusing range. The DR will NOT mount on any digital Leica M8/8.2/9/10 that I have tried. Something about the lens mount is not the same as most Leica M lenses.

Unlike most Leica rangefinder 50mm lenses, the lens head of the Dual Range unscrews for use for close-ups on the Leica Visoflex system.

Earlier DR's have a single feet or meter focusing scale, and clip on eyes with the E. Leitz enlarger condenser logo, as shown on the top photo of this page, and focus to 19.' Later DR's have a dual feet and meter focusing scale, with a simpler Leitz logo, and focus to 20.' The optics in both versions are generally believed to be identical. There may well be other variations as well. As pointed out to me by Leica expert Marvin Moss, the ball bearing mount on the earlier lenses is larger than on the later lenses. This results in the earlier close up attachment with the Leitz condenser logo fitting on later lenses, but not vice versa.

If you plan to buy a Dual Range, there are a few things to look for: The DR's soft lens coating scratches easily. The Leica glass of the period often gains a bit of haziness with the years. Shine a light through the lens from both ends. If fogged, the lens should be disassembled and cleaned by your Leica repairman. If you find a lot of scratches, don't buy it since recoating is expensive and takes a true expert. DR's often are sold without the close up attachment eyes. If your focusing helical has a serial number engraved, make sure it matches the serial number of the lens head. Finding the correct eyes for sale may take a lot of looking. Remember the 1st and 2nd versions don't mount the same eyes. Separation in the eyes is not that unusual, but seldom is the viewing affected, and of course there is no effect on the pictures- but it lowers value of the eyes by 50%. A nice little leather case was made for the eyes, and is hard to find only if you are looking for it. The DR takes standard Leica 39mm filters. My favorite DR hood is the versatile multi-purpose vented hood # 12585, which also thankfully fits the pre-ASPH 35/2 Summicron, the 35/3.5 and 35/2.8 Summaron, the 50/2 Summicron, the 50/2.8 Elmar (classic version), 90/2.8 Tele-Elmarit, 90/2.8 Elmarit, 90/4 Elmar, 135/4 Elmar and 135/4.5 Hektor. The proper vintage front cap is beautifully finished chrome with an embossed Leica script. Unfortunately the pretty classic chrome caps are easy to lose, so I suggest using a modern plastic front cap in the field.
